Alex and Alexa are a classic midwestern couple. They enjoy being outside, visiting their family cabin, heading to the local supper club and listening to Chris Stapleton. Without a doubt, they are our kind of people!
Their engagement session was sweet and simple. We headed out to Indian Lake to a spot not too far from where Alex hunts! As we made our way up to my favorite pathway, I could tell that they both were feeling a little nervous and shy. We took our time getting to the top, and chatted about their jobs and upcoming plans. Little by little, I could feel them start to relax.
In their initial wedding consultation I had asked them what it was about our work that they were drawn to. Alexa shared that she was worried about looking awkward in photos, but when she saw ours, she said “your photos just feel so fun and positive”. Alex added in that he likes how our photos feel “real”.
When we got to the perfect spot, I remembered the things that they love about our work. I reminded them that we were there to focus on their connection, and we did just that. Within minutes we had already captured so many genuine moments of laughter! I showed them my camera so they could see for themselves and the smile on Alexa’s face assured me that we had gotten it right. Their interactions were sweet, and we kept their engagement session simple.
We ended our evening at the famous ruins. For those of you who follow along on Instagram you already know the story of what happened there. If not, let me bring you up to speed. That evening I learned a valuable life lesson. Always read the signs.
There are a handful of goats that live near the ruins. Delighted at the sight of them, I could not resist the urge to go up and scratch their little chins. Within moments, I felt something warm running down my leg. I looked down and to my horror realized that I was being peed on! Apparently, there are multiple signs that read “do not pet the goats, stay back at least 100 feet”. In my overwhelming love and excitement for all things furry and four legged, I missed every one of those signs.
No worries though, the evening carried on and nobody else was marked during our session. We all laughed about it, and if nothing else I think it reassured both Alex and Alexa that they would never have to worry about feeling awkward in front of us again. I guarantee all of my couples that if anyone is most likely to do anything embarrassing at a session, it is me. So far, that continues to remain true.
Alex and Alexa, I hope that story makes it to your dinner table 30 years from now as you help your own children seek out a wedding photographer. Until then, we cannot wait to celebrate with you next year at The Field’s Reserve!
