Last week, Senior Spokesmodel, Delaney celebrated her senior year with two totally different looks. The first half of her session she wanted to keep natural with tall grassy fields and a soft color pallet which fit her laid back personality. We spent some time easing into her session and helping her get more comfortable and confident in front of the camera. She pushed past the nerves, trusted my direction and allowed herself to laugh and have fun. I loved seeing her reaction each time I showed her a photo from the camera, because I could tell that we we’re nailing her vision!
In addition to being a spokesmodel, Delaney has been a varsity softball player since her freshman year. Even though the uniform may not have been her first choice of wardrobe, she and her mom agreed that capturing her in action was important for her session. We packed away the pretty dress and florals, swapped them for dusty cleats and her favorite Ghost bat and headed into Pardeeville for softball themed senior photos.
The sun set was on our side that night. It peaked so perfectly between the buildings, we were able to grab a few posed portraits and then made our way onto the field. I knew that sports photos weren’t as exciting to her as the others, so I wanted to find a way to make them more fun which meant getting creative. After a few warm up swings, she made her way to the plate where I had her actually hit the ball!
Her mom was a good sport, and played along to help us get some action shots. After all, I don’t think I could pitch a ball while focused, let alone while trying to take a photo! Watching the two of them hit and throw the ball back and forth, laughing at each other throughout, was a special experience that I hadn’t intended on creating.
I’m all about fostering connection in my portraits, but usually the goal of a senior session is different. we’re typically focused on bringing forward your individual confidence. Delaney had the best of both worlds. As I was driving home from her session I started to think about her evening from a Mom’s perspective.
What a memory, to not only watch your child reach this major milestone of high school senior, but to have an unplanned night together at sunset, playing the game you’ve been teaching her since she was just a little kid.
