a sweet snowy shoot on private land
Every time it snows I stare out the window and wish I was shooting, so this past weekend when the snow started coming down ON MY WAY to Steph and Steven’s session I could not contain my excitement! It’s always been a dream of mine to shoot a romantic snowy session, but living in Wisconsin usually means we have FREEZING winters which makes that dream a little harder to achieve. This year though, I got my wish!
In addition to all the winter magic, this session held a special place in my heart because I’ve known Stephanie since the beginning of time. Her big sister Kenzie is my childhood bestie and I spent MANY snow days at their house probably playing yards away from this very line of trees! For her and Steven’s session, we shot on private land in Chilton, WI. I get asked often if I will come to people’s homes for session and the answer is YES! Many seniors opt for this if they grew up on a farm (something that’s a little harder to find here in Madison), and others will choose this if their property holds a meaningful place in the hearts!
I usually ask that we set up a time to FaceTime, or that clients send a few photos of what they had in mind so we can talk through when the lighting would be best in that particular spot. I don’t expect you to understand lighting and location, that’s my job! That’s why I will make recommendations on how and where to find the best light. It might not always be exactly in the spot you had envisioned, but I promise you will thank me later! For example, Steph had planned to shoot with the treelike to their backs, but she trusted my judgement and opted to shoot in the treelike which not only created a beautiful foreground for their portraits, it also let light in behind them and created depth!
